Shoot me an email at piikanala19@yahoo.com and I'll forward you the info on the July trip. Lauren and Adam and I are going with the Colorado area alumni group and you'd definitely be welcome. We're going as part of a month of service down on the Gulf-as many AmeriCorps alums, current volunteers, supporters, friends, etc as possible. Part of it is to draw attention to the good work that AmeriCorps NCCC people are doing down there, seeing as they're about to lose their funding. I think it's a crying shame that we can give tax breaks to rich people and fund the war in Iraq but our government doesn't want to keep such an excellent program going, but enough of my politics. We're partly doing it for some well-deserved PR on their part, but mostly to help out down there.
NCCC is the only program with an age requirement, 18-24. You never get too old for VISTA (indirect service/capacity building) or the state and national programs (direct service). There were people at my preservice orientation who were old enough to be my grandparents. There are programs all over the country doing pretty much anything you can imagine, and while they don't pay a lot it's an amazing experience, particularly if you work for a supportive organization.
www.americorps.org is the main website with a search engine for programs and all kinds of other cool information. There are also several livejournal communities full of AmeriCorps people. (Not surprisingly as there seems to be a livejournal community for just about anything.)
If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to try and answer them. I've had quite an experience as a VISTA and it's hard to believe I'm not even a year out of college.
