That is probably my favorite modern parable. During my deployment I even nicknamed a fellow soldier in another unit "Starfish-thrower" because she signed up so someone else wouldn't have to. She'd never heard the story, can you imagine?
Sadly, from my experience the one-liner "thinking life will treat you fairly because you're a good person is like thinking a bull won't charge because you're a vegetarian" is equally valid and sometimes more palpable.
