I'd like to recommend The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Best "surprised I like it" book I've read in a long, long time. Interesting plot and format, with a sort of whimsy and humor you rarely see in a book. I laughed out loud several times, and I never say that!

recommending an LJ friend to you: [personal profile] sassy_fae
she is recovering from some very debilitating emotional challenges. Her "recovery process" entries are locked and require friendage but I've told her you might be interested in reading.

Anyway, it's just an afterthought that popped into my head. Sassy_fae struggles daily but is excellent at chronicling her progress (and regression) I thought it might help you.
