New Orleans is an amazing place and I will do everything in my power to help her rebuild, including using my vacation days for more service trips and listening to the stories of people who live there.

But Maryland is my home. Therefore I've taken the NPRC position in Baltimore with the Central Maryland Red Cross chapter:

"After much careful consideration, I have decided to accept an AmeriCorps position with the National Preparedness and Response Corps at the Central Maryland Red Cross chapter in Baltimore, Maryland. Thank you for considering me for your AmeriCorps position. I wish you the best of luck in your work and in finding capable and hardworking AmeriCorps service members."

That is such a weight lifted off my shoulders.

Thanks.

*huge sigh of relief* As much as I love New Orleans, I just can't bring myself to move that far away from home. Maybe that's good and maybe that's bad, but that's what I get for having lived in the same small town my whole life.

But you better believe that I'll be back in New Orleans to volunteer at the first opportunity. That opportunity better not be with the Red Cross though. No more hurricanes allowed down there.

Thanks. It was hard, but I knew it was the right decision. Actually, I knew before I left for NOLA. I ran the Baltimore Women's Classic 5k June 25th and realized that I couldn't leave the Baltimore, or the area anyway. It's not New Orleans, but it is home.

Living at home, so I can save up money for a master's in social work. I'll get $9500 from 2 years of AmeriCorps, plus I should be able to save $3000 or so on top of that.

The Special Olympics sailing regatta is the 29th and 30th. I'm considering taking off the day before so I can come down early and hang out with you guys. Would you be around? I might have to use my last vacation day for NPRC training, though, so I'll keep you posted.

I knew this was going to be your decision long before you did. Congratulations--I know exactly how you feel. I'm very proud of you, and I wish I could celebrate this huge and satisfying decision with you. You should be proud of yourself, because you made the decision the right way, and you made the decision that I knew you'd be completely sure of. And now you can relax and enjoy it.

Thanks.

I don't know about relaxing though. This is disaster response I'll be doing after all. :-)

I'll rephrase: Now you can relax knowing that this difficult and challenging process is over, and enjoy knowing you took a big, confident step in the right direction. As I said, I knew this would be the right decision for you. Enjoy it. :-)

I figured you'd be happy about that.

Yay for Maryland. Yay for you not needing to find a place to hide the bodies of several of your students.
