If I don't get to Maryland by June 13th for an emissions test or get another extension, my Maryland car registration will be suspended.  Maybe I could get the extension, but I'm going to have to register my car here in August anyway once I start teaching because I won't be a full-time student anymore.

So it's finally time to transfer my car to Louisiana and get a Louisiana driver's license and start paying crazy 9th ward car insurance rates, time to make this all official.  Just in time for hurricane season.  By my calculations the vehicle transfer will be 18.50 + 3 + 8 + 20 + 260ish unless I paid sales tax in Maryland, in which case it'll be 130ish + 24.50 for the new license = anywhere from $204 to $334.  Lovely.  At least Maryland will give me back some of what it cost to register my car there because I still have 15 months left.

I know that was very exciting, you may go back to your regularly scheduled programming now.

I was thinking just this morning about what happens if I have to evacuate and I don't have any proof I live here. Well, this solves that problem, and right as hurricane season gets started.

As my roommate would say, I think the universe is trying to tell me something with this timing. Yes, it is exciting!

I'll still keep my Maryland phone number but half the people I meet here have out of state numbers from wherever they evacuated to. 504 (local) numbers didn't work after Katrina.

Let's see, 702 is Las Vegas, 850 is west Florida, 760 is San Diego, 254 is somewhere in Texas, and 917 and 914 are NYC.

It'll also be a treat to not have to explain myself every time I get asked for ID. "It's a Maryland license, I know, but that's not my address anymore." I'm a full-time student so it's not like I was going to get in trouble for it, but it just didn't feel legitimate.

I'll have lived here for a year as of August. I've stopped explaining that to everyone I meet, as if I have to justify my existence here.

I still have an old address on my license, one town ago and two address ago, if that makes sense. I've moved twice since moving to Wyoming and my license has the original address.

Get AAA if you don't have it, and use them for insurance, because it's the cheapest.
