"We are New Orleans Charter Science and Math High School, a new public high school which opened after Katrina. We are an open enrollment school with an emphasis on science and math instruction and high standards. We're trying to build a library that will support research and independent reading, and we are starting with almost no books. Without leaving your computer, you can donate books by going to our wish list at Amazon.com. Click on the "Wish List" tab at the top of Amazon's home page and enter "NOCSAM" in all caps in the wish list search bar. Our giant wish list can be a chore to read through so we recommend you sort it by title and view it in the compact mode. Please vote with your heart for a book you loved reading or one you think every kid should read. Amazon.com automatically ships your donation to us."

I'm sending them A Streetcar Named Desire, New Orleans: Mon Amour, and a book about Creoles in Louisiana. I saw A Streetcar Named Desire back in September with Erin as part of a Katrina relief moviefest, and I bought New Orleans: Mon Amour when I was in Locust Books (one my favorite local bookstores) ordering Poppy Z. Brite's Liquor (also about New Orleans). The way I see it, those books will help the students renew their faith in their city. They've been through a lot and they deserve to know how awesome their city was and is and will be.

Let's try this again. I haven't read Streetcar in forever, and Poppy's work sounds so good, I have to check it out soon. That Mon Amour book sounds very good, too--something I'll have to read before we head to NOLA.

I haven't even started on either Liquor or Mon Amour. I'll just have to wait until my schedule calms down somewhat, until then, it's whatever I can get on tape or CD. I have Isaac's Storm in queue for the first day of hurricane season.

Somehow I expected you'd be reading a hurricane book to commemorate the start of the season. I may have to pull out Sudden Sea and commemorate it with you, much as I know we'd both rather not think about it right about now.

Heyyyy... there's a good chance that that school will be the very one I'm working in this summer :)

Excellent. Hopefully my books will make it there by the end of the summer, though with the state of the postal service down there I'm not getting my hopes up.

Thanks! Let me know, just for curiosities' sake, what you end up getting for them.

Any idea if they'd be interested in gently used books??? I'm using money I don't have to go to NOLA this summer, so I can't really afford to BUY them books, but I have quite a collection of books that I've gathered over the years.

I'd email them and ask. You never know.

*smacks forehead* If I had been properly awake when I commented I'd have thought of that idea :)

Thanks.
