Lightning Safety

You don't want to be on the phone or on the computer in case lightning strikes your house and shorts everything out. You also don't want to be taking a bath, washing your hands, or doing the dishes in case lightning strikes the house and the electricity finds its way through your pipes and electrocutes you.

I'm going to get in trouble with the Kemptown Elementary YMCA Kids' Club parents because I told the kids they could use that to get out of washing the dishes. But hey, anything to make the kids remember how to stay safe.

Next project: writing a disaster plan for my family. We are woefully deficient in the disaster supplies kit department and that's embarassing. If there were to be a tornado right now, we would be in such trouble. So the moral of the story is to go here and start making a plan and building a kit.  It's not that hard.  Really.

I need to get on my family about that too. They seem to be more concerned with what's on television than what's on the fridge door (disaster stuff).

I did some research on this last month and found that you can use a cordLESS phone with no problems. It's the cordED phones from 10-20 years ago where one runs the risk of electrocution during a thunder storm.

And, just so ya know, I've been working in disaster medicine for 2+ years and we don't have a disaster kit, either. I'm so ashamed!!!

That's the story I was going off of on the cell phones. I'll take your word for it on the cordless phones.

I have a first aid kit in my car, along with a little bottle of water and some poptarts-that's it. That's embarassing. I got a flat tire a couple of weeks ago and I didn't even have my phone with me.

Wait, that story is about cordless phones. I guess I've been giving those kids some bad information.
